An emotional journey
JAN’S DASH – An inspiration against all odds
I did it, even though I didn’t believe I could in the beginning. I wrote a book, a biography of my sister.
Jan’s Dash is the story of my sister, Jan Binnie (nee Martin and formerly Cowley) from birth to death. I wrote it because I wanted to share with others what I owe to my sister: an attitude of gratitude whatever life flings at you.
This book is a legacy to Jan – her Dash. For those of you who haven’t heard of the dash, it is that little dash from your birth to the day you pass on.
I have integrated Jan’s story with personal development from my learnings over my life time.
Everything in life has a gestation period, it takes time to manifest. Jan’s Dash has had a gestation period of over 2 years. It has been an emotional journey with laughter and tears. I am grateful to all who shared parts of the journey with me.
Believe me, if you believe in something enough, you can see it in your minds eye, then you can achieve it.
When I started I kept telling myself and others that I wasn’t a writer, that all I was doing was trying to keep a promise to Jan and keeping her memory alive and share her experiences.
Guess what! That put up many blocks, I kept saying I needed help as I went to school to eat my lunch and my worst subject was English, and it was!.
So I kept putting the book aside waiting for the right help and inspiration.
I would hear people say ‘everyone has a book inside of them, everyone can write a book.’ My answer to that was yeah right!
I started thinking of memories & events and writing them down, it slowly grew changing many times in the process. As I did that, I started to gain confidence, to believe in myself, my own abilities and got assistance when I really needed it. ‘The editing.’
The message here is if you have faith in yourself, you are persistent and ask for help when you need it you CAN do it. If I can you can.
Jan battled Type 1 diabetes from the age of 10, and faced the challenges it presented her with—including multiple amputations of legs and fingers, a kidney transplant and blindness—with courage, grace and laughter. Jan was an inspiration to all who knew her.
My story is tribute to a remarkable woman, well-remembered in the Bay of Plenty for the good things she did, and the joy with which she did them. But along with the fond portrait of a much-loved sister, I talk about changes in the treatment of diabetes and how to live with this dis-ease.
I believe that the past conditioning and paradigms that so often control our lives must sometimes be modified or abandoned before we can move forward. I acknowledge that Jan’s life was her own inspiration , and that on Jan’s death I made a resolution to “live—love—laugh” as Jan had always done.
We need to be able to accept ourselves, warts and all, before we can take control of who we are and what we do. In reading this book you begin to understand Jan’s vision of the life worth living, and what I have continued to learn from it. “Life isn’t a practice round,” you only get one shot at it.
Isn’t it amasing that we really don’t get to know a person until it is too late, usually at their funeral? Have you ever sat at a funeral and listened to the eulogy being read and thought wow I really didn’t know that person.
I spent a lot of time with Jan and thought I knew her pretty well, but in writing this book, talking to the many people she touched, I have learnt so much more about her.
People are in our life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. Everyone that you meet is in your life to teach you something, start taking notice and learning. Jan will now be in mine forever, this book has brought her closer to me. I will always have an attitude of gratitude. If I have a sore foot I remind myself to be grateful that I have a foot.
Jan has left a legacy of love & giving, and I am glad that I have the opportunity to share it and carry it on as she was an amasing person.
We are all unique beings with our own unique gifts that we have to share and pass on to others. I hope you get the opportunity to enjoy my journey with Jan by reading Jan’s dash.
I too hope to leave a legacy of giving, paying it forward.
As a life success consultant with Bob Proctor’s company (Bob was the main character in the movie “The Secret”), I work with people from all walks of life and my biggest joy is to see the light go on in people when they get that they can change their life by the way they think.
Your results to date are only a reflection of your past thinking, they are no reflection of your potential.
The mind is a powerful thing. What you think about most is what you will get in life – positive or negative. Jan and the personal development training I have undertaken, have taught me to change the channel that is playing in my mind if I don’t like what I am hearing.
As Jan was a type 1 diabetic, almost blind, lived on mums kidney for 16 years and a multiple amputee she was involved in many organisations so for every book sold I am donating $10 of the cover price to the charities such as the Royal New Zealand Foundation for the Blind, Diabetes New Zealand and Homes for Hope. I will donate $10 per book to any charitable organisation that would like to sell Jan’s Dash as a fundraiser.
